Hair is a strand of protein that grows from a hair follicle in the skin:
Structure
Hair is made of two parts: the hair shaft, which is the visible part of the hair, and the hair follicle, which is the part below the skin. The hair follicle contains the hair root, which is the soft bulb at the base of the hair.
Function:
Hair protects sensitive areas of the body, like the eyes and nose, from dust. It also helps keep the body warm and communicates the sensation of light touch.
Growth:
Hair grows in cycles, with each cycle consisting of three phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen. During the anagen phase, hair grows quickly, typically at a rate of 0.3 mm per day. The catagen phase Is a transition phase that lasts about 2–3 weeks. During the telogen phase, the hair follicle is at rest and no new growth occurs.
Color:
Hair gets its color from melanin, a pigment produced by melanocytes in the hair papilla. The type of melanin determines the color of the hair, which is genetically determined.
Amount:
The amount of hair on a person’s body depends on genetics. Most hair follicles on the body produce vellus hairs, which are cosmetically insignificant. Larger terminal hairs are found on the scalp, eyebrows, armpits, beard, and pubic regions.
Good hair care routine:
Try to wash your hair only once or twice a week. If you need to wash it more often, use a conditioner (no shampoo) in between regular washes. To provide extra moisture, condition your hair before you shampoo it. Regardless of when you add the conditioner, make sure you’re also detangling your hair during the process.
